Area rugs add to the decor and aesthetics of a home. Like any other floor coving over time, they can become dingy and soiled and will need periodic cleaning to keep up their appearance. Many times, a thorough on-site surface cleaning is all that's needed to bring the area rug back to good. The process involves first removing as much dry soil as possible by thoroughly vacuuming the rug on both sides. Pretreatment of any bad spots like spills or pet contamination are done using specialized spotting solutions. On synthetic tufted rugs (rugs not woven) a pre spray is applied to help break down and emulsify the soils. Gentle agitation is used to aide in the separation of the soils from the fibers which is then followed by the rinse and immediate extraction phase of the process to flush away the suspended soils. We then groom the rug to prepare it for applying the protectant if requested, and then setting it up to begin the drying process using fans to move air across the fibers to expedite the drying.
Sometimes though they require a much more in-depth restorative process to thoroughly remove all embedded soils and dirt that can get trapped in the fibers. This is especially true with wool woven rugs like Persian and Chinese Orientals.
To properly clean these types of rugs requires us to pick them up and take them back to our shop to do a full cold water immersion cleaning. It's quite involved and takes a solid week to perform this type of cleaning. This will brighten the colors and add to the longevity of the rug.
